Frank Bauer is a contemporary artist known for his innovative use of light and spatial structures. His work explores the tension between control and chaos, often realised through meticulously constructed lighting systems and modular grid formations. Drawing from architectural principles and minimalist aesthetics, Bauer designs illuminated environments that challenge how we perceive space, depth, and rhythm.
At the core of his practice are his custom-built lighting systems – carefully engineered arrays that respond to spatial arrangements and viewer movement. These systems don’t merely light the space; they become the artwork itself, casting dynamic shadows and subtle gradients that animate otherwise static forms. Equally central are Bauer’s grids: clean, geometric frameworks that serve as both structure and concept. Whether suspended in air or anchored to walls, these grids interact with light to produce shifting visual patterns, creating an immersive dialogue between material and immaterial elements.
By combining technical precision with sensory experience, Bauer’s work invites viewers into a meditative engagement with form and illumination.
As Bauer notes, ‘light isn’t just a tool – it’s a material with its own behaviour, its own will. I work with it, not against it.’
This exhibition highlights the poetic balance of design, perception, and presence in his evolving practice.

It has occurred to me that this exhibition of wood block prints and large abstract paintings are simply “Arrangements in Space”. These new woodblock prints represent a departure from my long-held practice of multi-plate etching. Without the final black plate of the etching process to ground them, the colour is now untethered and a feeling of light and space prevails.
The making of the prints happen alongside that of the paintings. When they are together it’s easy to see how the ideas spin off from one to the other. The woodblock prints are informing the paintings, the paintings are informing the prints. There is a kind of dance between the two. I allow each new idea to evolve from those already made. The process involves a necessary immersive surrender to the unexpected. Arrangements and rearrangements of geometric shapes and colours meld to new and satisfying resolutions. This process may sound haphazard but for the works to make sense, they also require continual reflection, thought and decision making.
These works should also leave room for the viewer to complete the making, each in their own way, bringing their own influences and experiences to their evolving interpretation.
