The Curly Ones (the Artist’s Mother in Striped Chair with Ragdoll Cat)

I wanted to include this portrait / still life of my mother with one of the two cats she lives with. I’ve only recently started including people in my paintings and this one came about after a week-long road trip with mum, not long after my father died a few years ago. When I got back home to my studio, what came out reminded me of 1950s Fractured Fairytales, the cartoon aesthetic enmeshed in my identity and outlook on life.
