Life Bomb

I love my life, it’s close to how I envisaged it would be so many years ago when I began chasing my dream of being a successful artist. Of course, with everything there’s a yin and yang. There are many people with strange agendas entering my life. Sometimes, I can’t see who’s behind the smile? I then begin over-analysing everything I see and hear. I feel many of my paintings are no longer a quirky metaphor for my life… they are now becoming a distorted mirror.  Andrew Baines, artist.

Canoes

Figurative sculpture can lead you in many directions. I’ve always had a fondness of watercraft and their construction. In some cases this work also explores the relationships between individuals, including conflict, confusion, aggression and cooperation.

I was particularly interested in incorporating classic materials in these sculptural works: bronze, copper and wood in particular. The process of making bronze figures is very involved, including modelling the original figures, moulding, casting and applying the final patina. The colour chosen was an aqua green/blue to complement the reds of the copper and timbers of the canoes. The copper application on some of these canoes consists of dozens of individual copper shim pieces which have been fixed using tiny nails to the canoe shape. Many hundreds of nails are required for each hull. Tiny strips of wood are used for other hull parts, many shaped carefully to fit the taper of the hull. The final sculptures have then been mounted on wooden bases including redgum and blackwood.  Mark Judd, artist.
