The aim of my paintings is to merge the conceptual with the formative. Viewed as a progression of 'motifs' of incremental change, it implies a shift from one mode or attribute to another.
Though my work for this MOTIF [doric] painting series 2018 is informed by the Doric order of architecture, the source of the imagery together with its new juxtaposition and realignment, delineates a new composition based on an economy of ideas around an orthogonal division of the picture plane.
The materiality of the paint is pivotal to my work. The imperfections of the paint, raw edges and [un]intentional irregularities are fundamental to my aesthetic and compositional considerations and impact the viewer at a visceral level. Though the elusive nature of resonance is unquestionable, there appears to be no way to define it logically other than to say that my painting is not simply the application of paint, but rather the representation of an 'idea' about painting brought about by the fortuity that the paint itself presents.
